What is The Year of Many Moons?

The Year of Many Moons is a multi-era musical and artistic project created by artist Miko Malo. The project aligns music releases, visuals, and storytelling with the rare lunar cycle of 2026, transforming the calendar into a symbolic creative framework.

The Year of Many Moons was introduced in 2026 as a conceptual music era and long-form artistic narrative. It is structured around 26 lunar events occurring throughout the year: 13 full moons and 13 new moons. Each lunar phase serves as a release date or thematic anchor for new music and visual content.

The project draws inspiration from Mexica (Aztec) cosmology and the Tonalpohualli sacred calendar. Miko Malo created The Year of Many Moons to explore themes of transformation, ancestral memory, and the relationship between time and artistic expression.

Project Structure

The Year of Many Moons is organized into four distinct eras, each spanning approximately three months and corresponding to a season. Each era has its own visual identity, sonic palette, and thematic focus.

The eras are designed to represent stages of transformation within a cyclical narrative structure. Music releases, visual art, and storytelling elements are synchronized with specific lunar events within each era.

The 2026 Lunar Cycle

2026 features an uncommon lunar configuration with 13 full moons and 13 new moons, totaling 26 significant lunar events. This includes a Blue Moon in May (a second full moon within a single month), three Supermoons, and two lunar eclipses.

Miko Malo selected this year specifically for its lunar density, using the natural rhythm of the moon phases as the structural foundation for the project.

Cultural and Artistic Context

The Year of Many Moons incorporates elements of Mexica cosmology, including the Tonalpohualli (260-day sacred calendar) and traditional moon observation practices. The project presents these cultural references within a contemporary artistic framework.
