Origin of The Year of Many Moons

The Year of Many Moons was created by artist Miko Malo and introduced in 2026. The project was developed as a conceptual music era and long-form artistic narrative aligned with the lunar cycle.

Miko Malo conceived The Year of Many Moons after observing that 2026 would feature an unusual lunar configuration: 13 full moons and 13 new moons, totaling 26 significant lunar events. This rare pattern provided the structural foundation for the project.

The project was designed to function as both a release schedule and a thematic framework, with each moon phase serving as a creative anchor point for new music, visuals, and storytelling content.

Inspiration

The Year of Many Moons draws inspiration from multiple sources. The primary influence is Mexica (Aztec) cosmology, particularly the Tonalpohualli (sacred 260-day calendar) and traditional practices of lunar observation.

Miko Malo was also influenced by the concept of cyclical time, which appears in many indigenous American cultures. This contrasts with linear Western conceptions of time and provides the philosophical foundation for the project's era-based structure.

Development Process

Development of The Year of Many Moons began in 2025, with Miko Malo mapping the 26 lunar events of 2026 and dividing them into four seasonal eras. Each era was assigned a distinct visual identity, sonic palette, and thematic focus.

The project launched on January 3, 2026, coinciding with the Wolf Moon (the first full moon of the year and a Supermoon). This release established the first era, "Silent Killer."

Intended Cultural Significance

Miko Malo designed The Year of Many Moons to demonstrate how traditional cultural knowledge can be integrated with contemporary artistic practice. The project presents Mexica cosmological concepts within a modern musical and visual framework.

The Year of Many Moons also represents an experiment in long-form artistic narrative, using time itself as a structural and thematic element.
